Love: it’s everything

Last week at iConnect we talked about love… a fitting topic considering last thursday was Valentines day.

We live in a world that is in love with being in love. Turn the radio to any station and you will most likely hear a song that revolves around love. We love to be in love, talk about love, and remember times when when we felt loved.

Jesus says in Matthew 22 that the greatest commandment is to love God and to love other people. Not only is this the greatest commandment, but “on these two commandments depend all of the law and the prophets.”

All. On. Love.

Jesus told this to a group of people, the Pharisees, who knew all the rules. They even had rules to help them keep the rules. However, in this interaction, Jesus pushes against their knowledge with a statement about their hearts.

It is not enough to know the law, you must love. If your “rightness” does not come from love, then it ceases to be right. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13 that if we don’t love, we are just a clanging cymbal…..which is a very unfortunate sound.

Love is not something reserved just for Valentines day; it is something we should live and model every day. I don’t always get it right, but the goal is to keep loving more, keep believing more, and to keep trusting more. God will work the rest out; I need to focus on love. Because when we love God and love others from that love, we will be right where we are supposed to be.

Here’s to 2013 being the year that we love more than ever before.
